The first new albums of the year

by birdsong @ Monday, Jan. 09, 2006 - 10:37:22 pm

1. The Low Symphony - Philip Glass.
Inspired by three pieces from Bowie's "Low" album by Brian Eno.
'Bigger' than I expected, and less minimal. I wonder if this is a good introduction to Glass?
A little too far over into the 'classical' genre for my taste range (the symphony bit should have been a clue!) and experience, but it is an inspiring work nonetheless.
A wonderful example of an idea Foxx subscribes to regarding the copying and enveloping of other people's work and ideas. I hold with this absolutely. Once something is out there, done and published it goes into the public domain and becomes a ghost. It can filter through the consciousness of another artist, inspire them and give them a whole new idea for an original piece, albeit based on and using elements of the first example.
Copyright is such bollocks and will be the ultimate death of creativity.

2. Climate of Hunter - Scott Walker.
At last. Talking of inspired and original creativity. This guy has it in bucket loads. I couldn't play it all through first time - made me want to cry. Everyone should immerse themselves in Walker's haunting voice and hypercharged sensitivity at least once a week. Astonishingly beautiful, cruel, and desperately sad.

Still reeling

Sometimes I feel I can sit up all night writing things. Pages and pages of the biog are coming out of my "pen" at the moment.

Well timed that RH should call tonight, with three more interviews he's found. Transcripts this time, and one as early as July 1977, between the first two albums. I'm working u a few ideas on how to put the Media Archive together but its not straight forward.
Simplest idea is to have one page that lists all the material in chronological order. I'd prefer that because all the cross-referencing and stuff linking albums or projects will be comprehensively covered in my book. But RH wants to be more thorough in the archive and somehow link all the bits that refer to, for instance, metamatic.
That will be much more of a challenge.

Father inlaws all day Saturday. Freezing and wet.
Snow was forecast that turned to drizzle, and here too tonight we have similar. Its really crap.

My bike was stolen on Friday. Outside the Psychic Cafe while trying to book trx a reflexology session for her birthday. Bastards. And the cash point spat my card out so I couldn't pay for it anyway.
The whole present thing this year is a farce, I've ordered some prints of digital photos from Tesco online, but they sent the order back saying the credit cxard was declined. First time I've used it for 15 months. Phone Barclaycard and they say its fine and give me the authorisation code. Email Tesco - they havent got back to me. Will the prints come or not?
At least I did buy her a decent pen on Friday.
I have always hated shopping online - and this is why. Its SO much more reliable, interesting and generally sensual to go into a shop, have a chat with someone and hand over cash for an item you have seen and chosen and can hold in your hand.
Thus (at last) I will be able to pick up the Nation 12 album from HMV next week. I have steadfastly refused to buy it online from ebay as a matter of principle, and it is now available in the shops. Which means you can use your own money to buy it. How cool is that??

great idea guys - I think it might catch on...

Used my influence on friday to get my name down on the guest list to see Goldfrapp at the Guildhall in February. Not something I intend to make a habit of, and I did at least intend and offered to buy the tickets.

LC is two already. She's so cute.

We became godparents for the first time today.
No-one knows how touching that feels in the circumstances.

Faith is such a marvellous thing. A great comforter. To know that things will somehow be Ok and provision will be made.
here I am Lord
is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go Lord
If you lead me...

The Lights come out at night

by birdsong @ Monday, Jan. 09, 2006 - 12:46:19 am

The lights come out at night
When its quiet
To dance on the river
Watching the moon swim
We try to think that we can understand
The shadows
The stars
In wonder and on bridges
We can only see
How little we know
Not how much
How much there is that we will never know
And all that we cannot see
Beyond the edges of the sky
Reflected
Hand in hand
Crossing the water
Beneath their feet
An everchanging tide
Reaching out
To catch the sound of
Footsteps on the water
Each tiny spirit holds a torch
A candle
A singer's measured breath
Giving life to dreams and
Dance to Never Moments

Starts off well enough and I happy until about halfway. Then it stumbles and stutters about a bit...
I wonder what its about?
